Design-Stage SAP Calculations for a New-Build House in Scotland
We provided design-stage SAP calculations for a distinctive new-build house in Scotland as part of the building warrant application process. The property comprised three separate structural sections joined only by doorways: two outer wings with conventional pitched roofs and loft insulation, and a central grand section featuring a large pitched roof room with its own distinct thermal characteristics.
The Challenge
The multi-section layout, varying roof constructions, and different insulation strategies created a complex thermal model. Accurate assessment of inter-zone heat transfer through the connecting doorways, thermal bridging at junctions, and the overall fabric performance was essential to demonstrate compliance with Scottish Building Standards Section 6 and to support the warrant submission.
Our Approach
We modelled each section of the dwelling appropriately within the SAP framework, correctly accounting for the pitched roof and loft insulation in the outer units versus the grand central roof space. Heat loss and gains across the connecting doorways were evaluated, and thermal bridging details were incorporated.
The calculations were delivered at design stage so the architect and client could proceed with confidence, with clear recommendations for any minor refinements if needed.
Results
The design-stage SAP calculations confirmed that the proposed dwelling met the required energy performance targets. The building warrant application was supported with robust evidence, allowing the project to move forward smoothly. We remain available for as-built updates and final certification as construction progresses.
